EJC: French publishing group sets up rival to Wikipedia

France has long battled against the Anglophone cultural invasion and now it has thrown down a virtual gauntlet. Larousse, the French encyclopaedia created more than 150 years ago, is launching its own – it would say improved – version of Wikipedia. Its first, free-access, online encyclopaedia will have the same contributor function but, to try to surmount the inherent problem of unreliability of articles, which can be modified by anyone at any time, Larousse has introduced some constraints. Users who want to contribute have to sign up and their names will then appear on the article they submit. Unlike on Wikipedia, anonymous contributions are not allowed, and once written, contributions become protected. Alongside the user-written pieces, Larousse will be making available 150,000 articles from its universal encyclopaedia, plus 10,000 images. Larousse is promising more in the future, along with the inclusion later this year of hundreds of video clips from channels such as National Geographic. (The Independent)

LETTER FROM TERRY: A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Danny, hey, hi there…by way of introduction, many years ago when you were with WBCN my friend Jimmy Kane, the greatest harmonica player the world has never known, and I, did a moving job for you - Terry’s Trucking, truck all painted with mushrooms - either from or to Charles Laquidara’s apartment in the Back Bay…then you treated us to a nice tour of the station high above the Hub…

It’s good to see over the years you’ve not lost your way nor your voice and are still fighting for what is good and right…

I take the liberty of sending you a copy of my much-written about, and highly acclaimed (’Notes From The Dump ranges from terrible to brilliant…’) Notes From The Dump

Thanx Danny for all you do/have done/will do.

Regardz. TWard, Terry

MARK ROBINOWITZ WRITES

“I hope you are familiar with the book

Crossing the Rubicon: the Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil by Michael Ruppert

(uniquely ignored by the liberal alternative media and the corporate media, but it expands on the themes of your opinion piece for alternet - yes, the “president” is a figure head and not where the real power resides)”

Thanks to all who wrote. Time for me to pack up. Hope you find this work useful. It costs a fortune to get access in a hotel here.

I hope to get back to New York time to drop in on the 40 anniversary shin dig for NACLA, the North American Congress on Latin America. Among its early publications was “WHO RULES COLUMBIA” an analyisis of the university’s powe structure and war contracting published right after the Columbia Strike and with documents, um, “liberated” from the office of President Grayson Kirk. Oh what researchers had to do to learn the truth. A year later, I worked on a similar project after the Harvard student strike. We called ours “HOW HARVARD RULES.”

    NaBNYC Says:

Why this sudden hysteria in the U.S. among our politicians about Hamas? Why are they the new bogeyman? Why is every presidential candidate forced to pledge unconditional support for Israel, and to commit that they will refuse to ever speak to anyone in the middle east except Israel?

McCain says Hamas likes Obama, and Obama says uh-uh. Bush says that Obama is “like” a Nazi appeaser because he said he would talk with Iran. (I guess we’re supposed to ignore the fact that George W. Bush’s grandfather Prescott was a trading partner with the Nazis, made lots of money working with them).

Hillary swears that she will start a nuclear war if Iran so much as looks sideways at Isreal, that she will bring about an end to the world, or cause the incineration of every American, for the benefit of Israel. Why is this going on? Why is this such a central part in our presidential election?

I mean other than the fact that the U.S. politicians give Israel billions — I think 11 billion last year — of my money, and Israel takes a big chunk off the top and launders it back into the U.S. and uses it to bribe our politicians. Other than that, what’s going on?

The U.S. public has become less pavlovian about the Bush claims that we must stay in Iraq to fight al Queda. So we need a new bogeyman, and up pops Hamas. Hamas is the new bogeyman. It apparently doesn’t matter that the U.S. is not at war with Hamas, and they’ve never done a thing to us.

In fact, let’s look at the numbers. In 2006 Palestinians (including all Palestinians who happens to be associated with Hamas) killed 17 Israelis. In 2007, they killed 13 Israelis. So in that two year period of 2006 and 2007, there were 30 Israelis killed by any Palestinians. Thirty. That’s it.

In the U.S., there were 1.4 million violent crimes in 2005, and 17,000 murders. As of 2007, we had 800,000 gang members terrorizing neighborhoods across the U.S.

It is estimated that 3 million women in the U.S. are physically and violently assaulted by their husbands or boyfriends every year. Three million women, for whom the U.S. politicians do nothing, and who they never mention. And not one of those three million women was attacked by Hamas.

During 2006 and 2007 Israel killed approximately 1000 Palestinians. And 30 Israelis were killed.

I think Israel can defend itself against this “bogeyman” Hamas. When will the media stop this recitation of nonsense and start reporting the truth?
