CBS Pays Fine, Files Challenge:Network Appeals FCC Ruling in Super Bowl Indecency Case

TV Week reports:

Nearly two years after the Federal Communications Commission first ruled Janet Jackson’s 2004 Super Bowl halftime wardrobe malfunction was “indecent,” and months after it fined CBS and its stations $550,000 for its airing, CBS today paid the fine and immediately filed suit in Philadelphia challenging the FCC decision.

YOUR VOICES:

Gordan Stephan submits a poem: “To The Silence”

”such sadness
such pain
surely no one is right if everyone is wrong
we live in hardened hearts
darkened by the vacuum of hate
and it’s easier to choose sides and fix blame
than fix our thoughts
feel our madness
and see the shallowness of our cares
we tend to such a small view
of such a very small world
intemperate
impulsive
and thoroughly convinced
that no one else sees
no one else knows
no one else holds the light of truth
in words we destroy the other
in deeds we echo our words
and then, silence again
alone

IN MEMORIAM

My former colleague at WBCN, Darrell Martinie, the popular on air astrologer, astrology known as the ‘Cosmic Muffin’ has died at 63:

The Boston Globe reports:

“After Mr. Martinie’s funeral Mass tomorrow, the Roma Band — musicians known to many for their performances at feasts in the North End — will lead the funeral progression from the church to the cemetery.

“In addition to his husband, Mr. Martinie leaves his son, John Greene of Algonquin, Ill.; three sisters, Bonnie of Naperville Ill., Beverly Foster of Maui, Hawaii, and Susan Hickerson of East Peoria, Ill.; and two grandsons.

“The funeral Mass will be said tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church in Saugus. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Saugus.”

LEAVING ONE WAR FOR ANOTHER

I am heading upstate and taking a break from obsessing with the war. I will be screening my film IN DEBT WE TRUST Sunday at 4 at the Rosendale N.Y.Theater, a kind of return command performance to assess audience response. I will tell you how it goes.

This is all I have time or the stomach for, but I will say that my skepticism with and alternative to the conventional media wisdom about the war now feels as if it is being vindicated. I really don’t want be be right. I want this to be over. Don’t you?

COMING NEXT

Iranians fear they are next:

Please pay attention tomorrow to the Congolese election and the march for an election recount in Mexico.

On the seventh day, I rest.

Game Over. I have reluctantly disabled the comments on my blog because a small number of self-indulgent spammers and neer do wells with nothing to say about any of the issues I raise or report on, have stepped up the volume of their sniping and SPA's--Stupid personal attacks. I am sure readers find them as offensive and adolescent as I do. All hide behind anonymous emails and never really want replies or a dialogue. Snarky is one thing; insults another.

Your comments are welcome and I am happy to post them in the blog. Share comments, questions and criticisms by emailing me here.

    Thank you for understanding.

"Curtailment of free speech is rationalized on grounds that a more compelling American tradition forbids criticism of the government when the nation is at war...Nothing can be more destructive of our fundamental democratic traditions than the vicious effort to silence dissenters."
