Dissector Forum: Nazis in Iraq

Giulia Ascoli writes from Europe about a story that’s had some play and probably should have more in light of frequent comparisons in the US media/government between Saddam Hussein and Adolph Hitler.

”I would like to draw your attention to the piece of news that scores of neo-Nazis are being recruited by the US military, according to watchdog organisation Southern Poverty Law Center.

“I haven’t seen it on any UK or Italian media yet (although I read an Italian reporter working on it was refused publication by a Milan daily last Saturday on the grounds that his article was excessive and lacking enough sources).”

Eugene Duran asks:

“Danny, if the federal government feels it can invade a congressman’s office then why have they not invade Tom Delays office? Just asking.”

M Hoop writes from North Carolina

’ did mexico use diebold voting machines from ohio and florida, or are those states keeping the machines warm for next time? I’ve not heard a single question on the networks about the possibility of florida/ohio style machinations…..Katie Couric will fit right in with the lightweight faux news “shows.”

TOPPLING CUBA

Yesterday I reported on the Bush Administrations plan to overthrow the Cuban Revolution. Katherine Hanna writes from Ithaca New York with a new resource:

”Dear Danny - I found this website, the only one that explained the ramifications of this “Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba.”

APPEAL: HELP INDY IRAQ REPORTER DAHR JAMAIL

Richard Cranium writes:

He’s getting ready to hit the road again, and is raising funds for the trip. It’s not a cheap endeavor to travel to Iraq, and perhaps even more importantly, get in and out of the country safely. I never ask for donations to political candidates, and rarely ask for donations to the many worthy causes that land in my email inbox on a weekly basis. This is one of those exceptions.

If you have a few dollars you can spare, please click over to Dahr’s site, and donate to his efforts. There are so very few reporters in Iraq with the integrity to practice something other than “hotel journalism”, who bring back the true story of Iraq, and who history will remember as a true recorder of what happened to the people of Iraq as a result of the ongoing nightmare.

Dahr Jamail is one of a rare breed - a true investigative journalist, in every sense of the word. His important work is deserving of everyone’s support, because he’s beholden only to the truth. I can think of few people, causes, or endeavors that are more worthy.”

WHY DID ZIDANE DO IT (pt 2)

A View On that “Head Butt:” Zidane and the ‘war on terror’

ITALIAN PLAYER SPEAKS OUT

Sports Illustrated reports:

“MILAN, Italy (AP) — Marco Materazzi admits he insulted Zinedine Zidane before the France captain head-butted him in the World Cup final. Materazzi denies calling him a “terrorist.”

“I did insult him, it’s true,” Materazzi said in Tuesday’s Gazzetta dello Sport. “But I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I’m not cultured and I don’t even know what an Islamic terrorist is”

I WAS WRONG: HAPPY TO CORRECT

Bert writes about the french coverage of the world cup’s incident.

“You were told that while Italian TV has shown the “incident” over and over, it was only shown once in France. That is perfectly wrong, since I saw this incident numerous times on french TV, even if we don’t have that much network, especially compared to the US!

I’m not a football fan, and I personally consider that even if Zidane was insulted, he should have keep his self control, because it was an important event and his last professional appearance. I must admit I was afraid of a wave of xenophobia and ridiculous behaviour following the event here in France, and for the moment, none of this occurs. BTW, racism in Italy, and especially in football is a documented and important issue that should be dealt with by authorities.”

TOILSEC: THE POOP ON THE PRESIDENT’S POOP

AI just saw this from Magginkat:

”According to our Austrian sources, Austrian newspapers are currently abuzz with special security details of George W. Bush’s recent trip to Vienna.

“Although the heavy-handed Gestapo-like security measures meted out to Viennese home owners, business proprietors, and pedestrians by Secret Service agents and local police before and during Bush’s visit received widespread Austrian media attention, it was White House “toilet security” (”TOILSEC”), which has Austrians talking the mos

“The White House flew in a special portable toilet to Vienna for Bush’s personal use during his visit. The Bush White House is so concerned about Bush’s security, the veil of secrecy extends over the president’s bodily excretions. The special port-a-john captured Bush’s feces and urine and flew the waste material back to the United States in the event some enterprising foreign intelligence agency conducted a sewage pipe operation designed to trap and examine Bush’s waste material. One can only wonder why the White House is taking such extraordinary security measures for the presidential poop.”

"Curtailment of free speech is rationalized on grounds that a more compelling American tradition forbids criticism of the government when the nation is at war...Nothing can be more destructive of our fundamental democratic traditions than the vicious effort to silence dissenters."
