THE REAL COSTS

Mary Lawrence of St Augustine Florida:

Please consider coverage similar to truth telling of Vietnam in your reporting of Iraq. The people need to know the real costs of this war both in dollars, American lives and Iraqi civilians. This, I believe, is the responsibility of the media in a free country.?

SUPPORT ALT MEDIA

Benjamin Melançon, human being writes with ideas:

?Excellent points and strategy. I would only add/request two things.

?First, pointers on how we localize taking this fight to the media, targeting local and regional outlets that while possibly easier to pressure seem to have decided they do not have to cover the war at all. I think we need to connect with enough people so we can protest specific ‘local’ deaths, injuries, and of course government cutbacks (most neatly self-contained would be those cutbacks affecting injured/traumatized veterans).

Second, I would suggest we - and I ask you to help - promote those independent news sources that aren’t lying to us. Mostly I’m speaking of The NewStandard, which is a great effort bringing progressive hard news five days a week and has been for a couple years. I think it’s essential that it survive to keep doing this, and it is trying to grow to 1000 members in order to do so. It is also essential as the power of a positive example - for the editor will write back and respond to any reader request - for the U.S. (although the project I’m involved in is the Narco News Bulletin, http://narconews.com/ which is an invaluable source of news and information from Latin America).

"Curtailment of free speech is rationalized on grounds that a more compelling American tradition forbids criticism of the government when the nation is at war...Nothing can be more destructive of our fundamental democratic traditions than the vicious effort to silence dissenters."
