London: Yesterday I was in a London cinema watching an ad for the Make Poverty History campaign launched by OXFAM in association with the broad demands for more aid and assistance to Africa. The ad featured an organizer for the campaign takking to entertainment company urging them to do a movie or special on the subject. Millions might have tuned in to watch Live 8 pop stars, but how does that show that anyone cares? I’m not saying that people don’t care but watching a concert is hardly an effective way of demonstrating your concern or acting on it. Those people that have gone to Scotland to protest have done far far more to demonstrate their concern than those who sat in a park to watch a concert having snagged the available tickets. Those who sat at home watching it on TV were passive consumers of celebrity bull. There is a lot more going on with this Make Poverty History stuff. People might care, but they have to prove it and act to change their own lives if they really want to help Africa. They also have to be vigilant that they are not being hoodwinked by Blair and co with the help of MPH.
