Rupert Eyes the Internet

INTERNET BEWARE

From Newsday:

“WASHINGTON - Media mogul Rupert Murdoch yesterday outlined plans to overhaul the Web sites of his New York Post, Fox News Channel and other properties to make them destinations for young people, who increasingly don’t have time for daily newspapers or the evening news broadcasts of television networks.

“Speaking to a meeting of top editors here, the chief executive of News Corp. said he wants to shake up the Internet in the same way that Fox and the Fox Broadcast Network forced changes upon older TV networks. “The challenge for us is … to create an Internet presence that is compelling enough for users to make us their homepage, he said.

“Murdoch acknowledged that it would require millions of dollars to upgrade News Corp.’s many sites, but passing these costs along to users, in the form of subscription fees, is unrealistic. “I would love it but I don’t hold out any hope for people to pay for our Internet sites,” he said, adding that advertising revenue would have to support the cyber operations. Among major papers, only The Wall Street Journal, currently charges access fees.

“Murdoch also said he was unlikely to purchase additional papers until Manhattan-based News Corp. develops a successful Internet strategy.”

Greetings Media Channellers; Yes, journalists are considered targets of interest by the U.S. military. This follows the adoption of the IDF (Israeli Defence [sic] Force’s “rules of engagement whole prior to the launch of Iraq II.

I scribbled a short piece on this at the blog.

Game Over. I have reluctantly disabled the comments on my blog because a small number of self-indulgent spammers and neer do wells with nothing to say about any of the issues I raise or report on, have stepped up the volume of their sniping and SPA's--Stupid personal attacks. I am sure readers find them as offensive and adolescent as I do. All hide behind anonymous emails and never really want replies or a dialogue. Snarky is one thing; insults another.

Your comments are welcome and I am happy to post them in the blog. Share comments, questions and criticisms by emailing me here.

    Thank you for understanding.

"Curtailment of free speech is rationalized on grounds that a more compelling American tradition forbids criticism of the government when the nation is at war...Nothing can be more destructive of our fundamental democratic traditions than the vicious effort to silence dissenters."
