Blurry in Beantown

Hear Danny Schechter’s latest recording in the Audioblog. It’s a reading of his essay “Making Media Matter” from the book “What We Do Now” (Melville House).

DAY TRIP

JUST CHECKING IN: Back in Boston for the day… screened WMD at Brandeis University on the day the official WMD report came out saying the intelligence community/Bush Admin was “dead wrong.”

What a choice of words… impressed to find a university with a new investigative journalism program…. I reminisced about Brandeis, once the sinecure of the national student strike against the war in Vietnam, home of Herbert Marcuse and my old pal Abbie Hoffman, whose brother Jack came to the screening… In many ways, Abbie was one of my media gurus… kids asked good questions… not all knew who he was.

Afterwards went to a fundraiser for Boston Mobilization to hear about the campaign against the new BU Bio Lab that I am also hoping to make a film about… heard a scientist describe how this research into deadly pathogens can launch a new bio arms race — scary — more to come.

My TV appearance was canceled at the last moment because of the focus on the Pope’s health… Ted Koppel announced he is retiring… Disney must be pleased to be able to launch some entertainment show up against Leno and Letterman… Hot money is that Jon Stewart might get the nod.

That’s all I have time for.

Lots to say, not much time today to say it.

Oh for the good old days, collecting welfare, marching in the streets protesting the evils of the world, smoking dope and banging the Brandeis chicks

IN DEBT WE TRUST
Why are so many Americans are being strangled by debt? In Debt We Trust is a journalistic confrontation with the debt and credit industry.

WMD
Weapons of Mass Deception (WMD) goes inside the military-media complex, exposing the war the world saw but Americans didn't.

Soundbyte

"Curtailment of free speech is rationalized on grounds that a more compelling American tradition forbids criticism of the government when the nation is at war...Nothing can be more destructive of our fundamental democratic traditions than the vicious effort to silence dissenters."
