$10,000 Reward for Jeff Gannon Sex Evidence
“A wealthy Washington socialite is offering a $10,000 reward for proof that Jeff Gannon, an allegedly gay kinky-sex prostitute / escort / white house reporter / GOP operative, has had sexual relations with top-ranking government officials.”

DOUG IRELAND PRAISES A FRENCH NEWSPAPER
“Yesterday saw the resignation of Chirac’s new Minister of the Economy, Herve Gaymard, after only 3 months, thanks to revelations by Le Canard Enchaine, the investigative-satirical French weekly, about a gigantic duplex apartment the Minister had rented for himself at the taxpayers’ expense (and then he lied about it).
“This is a hard blow to Jacques Chirac, as Minister Gaymard was his long-groomed and hand-picked protege, and the Economic Ministry is considered the Number Two cabinet post after the prime minister. But this is only the latest scalp on Le Canard’s belt, and one of the newspapers frequently criticized by Le Canard–the very conservative Le Figaro, recently purchased by arms merchant/economic goliath Serge Dassault, himself a conservative Senator–recognized some of this history in a grudging article today (Saturday). And there are many, many more politicians who’ve been brought down by Le Canard than Le Figaro mentions.
“In fact, Le Canard has broken more political scandals than the rest of the French press put together: corruption, misuse of office, secret financing of ALL major political parties (except the Greens), abuse of power– the list of the kind of unethical conduct on which Le Canard shines its mordant spotlight is quite long.
Maybe its time for The Onion to get into serious reporting: England has Private Eye. What do we have?
THE HISTORY
EJC reports: “While the Washington, DC press world keeps following the daily revelations about controversial reporter James Guckert who was using a false name Jeff Gannon, some historical perspective is probably necessary. A look back at morethan 200 years of the Washington press corps and its relationships with previous presidents shows that relations have never been as even-handed and unconflicted as many would like them to be today. So says Donald A. Ritchie, a former U.S. Senate historian and author of the new book, “Reporting From Washington: The History of The Washington Press Corps”.

AIR AMERICA NAMES NEW CEO
Billboard reports: “As first tipped here, music industry veteran Danny Goldberg is joining Air America as its new CEO, a position that has been open since acting CEO Doug Kreeger stepped down in December. Kreeger remains on the board.
“Danny Goldberg is truly the best of three worlds — a successful media entrepreneur who has repeatedly made his mark on American culture, one of the smartest and most creative media executives in his generation, and a man who deeply believes in the mission of Air America,” network chairman Rob Glaser said in a prepared statement.
“I have admired Air America since its inception and am profoundly impressed by both the cultural and the business accomplishments of its board, staff and on-air talent in the past year,” Goldberg said. “Joining in their efforts is one of the greatest honors of my professional life.”
“The speculation that he would join Air America began when Goldberg recently stepped down as chairman/CEO of Artemis Records, the company he founded in 1999.
“In a recent interview with sister publication Billboard — and while he was still with Artemis — Goldberg may have hinted at the move.
“I’m very open about the things I could do in the future,” he said. “I could see doing personal management, working for a major [or] working for a media company that’s not currently in the music business.”

VETERAN TV JOURNALIST BLASTS BROADCAST JOURNALISM
Tom Fenton has left CBS after a distinguished career. His final “story” is a newsmaking new book out today denouncing what the industry he served for a lifetime has become. Here’s the announcement from Harper Collins:
“In his long journalistic experience as the senior European correspondent for CBS News, Tom Fenton has reported on everything from the fall of the Shah of Iran to the movements of al Qaeda throughout Europe — a story he was tracking before 9/11. And in the three years since that fateful day, he has come to a sobering realization: Our once-noble news media — and network TV news in particular — have abdicated their responsibility to the American people, and endangered us in the process.
“As Fenton points out, much of the United States still depends on the networks for most of its information about the world. But after the fall of the Soviet Union, the networks gutted their news-gathering operations — just as the old Cold War status quo was shattering — leaving behind an unstable and violent new world order. Once a public service, the network news was commandeered by its corporate parents as a cash cow. In-depth reporting on critical issues was replaced with saturation coverage of sensationalistic crime stories and simpleminded “news you can use.” Even as genocide spread through Africa — and Islamic terror festered in the Middle East — international reporting disappeared almost entirely from the airwaves. And Americans were left uninformed, unable to judge the accuracy of politically biased stories (on both sides of the spectrum), and utterly unprepared for the war on terror about to descend on their doorstep.
“In Bad News, Tom Fenton offers a fiery indictment of just how far “the news” has fallen. “This is not just a book,” writes Fenton. “This is the beginning of a campaign to galvanize America. We need more and better news. Our lives depend on it.”

Tom Fenton, a journalist with backbone and a powerful sense of the absolutely essential role of the fourth estate in the grand experiment know as the United States of America. He, Walter Kronkite, and Bill Moyers are media patriots of the first order, and at this point national treasures and an endangered species. Thank you, Tom Fenton, for your book and its call to arms.

March 2nd, 2005 at 3:29 amThe success of the Bush administration is a clear oxymoron.
How do we follow up on Tom Fenton’s call to action to get better foreign news coverage. I have written to the FCC. Reply received was the generic comment that the FCC does not patrol broadcast content - never mind that news is supposed to be a “public service requirement” for access to the public airways. I wrote back underlining this point and received no reply at all. HOW DO WE MOUNT A CAMPAIGN FOR FOREIGN NEWS COVERAGE? Please pass this question on to Mr. Fenton as well. Thanks
