When You Watch the Oscars

A film to watch, an appeal to support.

1. AIDS MESSAGE (Celebrity Style)

The ONE Campaign announces it is infiltrating the air waves. Thanks to Bono’s clout and support from key celebs:

“As a supporter of The ONE Campaign, we want you to be the first to know about our brand new video that will premiere tonight during the Oscars award show. Our new, celebrity-studded “ONE Word for the ONE Campaign” video will be featured during the Oscar broadcast on ABC. Be sure to tune in this Sunday, Feb 27 between 8:00 and 11:30 pm EST. Check your local listings.

“This video calls on all Americans to raise their voice in the fight against global AIDS and poverty, and has been filmed across the world over the past two months with today’s hottest celebrities. Make sure to tell your family and friends to tune in as well, and encourage them to add their voice to this effort.

“Along with this new video, we have just launched our new URL ONE.org, where you can be one of the first to get your very own ONE white wristband. Worn by teachers, doctors, and homemakers, you’ve seen them in the pages of People and US Weekly on your favorite stars. Visit ONE.org now to get yours!”

Maybe this what it takes to get Oscar viewers to pay attention in our celebrity infected culture.

2. Watch this documentary that aired on Canadian television about how the star machine helps the war machine. From ICH:

Operation Hollywood

“You must glorify war in order to get the public to accept the fact that your going to send their sons and daughters to die.”
Real Video

The inside story of the cozy relationship between big box office American war movies and the Pentagon.

FINGERS CROSSED

I am hoping for recognition for Hotel Rwanda and Tomorrow, the South African entry into the foreign language category. Also fingers crossed for Gary Griffith, a member of our Globalvision family, who shot one of the documentaries that has been nominated.

Media Mania

I will be on Bob McChesney’s Media Matters program today at 2 my time. The show broadcasts in the “heartland” of America — Champaign Urbana Il. Also there are more airings of the CNN International Correspondents who I am on. A new friend in Paris who saw it yesterday writes: “saw you on international correspondents tonite on cnn. you did a great job — altho hardly recognized you with a tie. your points were well made and you got in good plugs for WMD and your blog. and it was perfect when the reuters guy had to finally admit that they can report events but can’t control the way their clients spin them.”

Update: Today’s “Media Matters” program with Danny is archived here. Also fyi, “Media Matters” offers a podcast feed.

"Curtailment of free speech is rationalized on grounds that a more compelling American tradition forbids criticism of the government when the nation is at war...Nothing can be more destructive of our fundamental democratic traditions than the vicious effort to silence dissenters."
