The Dissector Mail Bag and Inbox

YOUR LETTERS

Ed Fields writes to tell us that the US is not the only country sabatoging the Kyoto accord. “It should really be — minus the United States, China, and India — granted they signed, but they (China, and India) have no restrictions and this should really be made apparent.

PS: “I look forward avidly everyday to your Dissector posting, thank you again for a truly great service.”

ON UFOS:

Ryan Carter writes:

Bravo to Peter Jennings for having the bravery to tackle a subject that generally causes people to lose their credibility, despite the fact that there are over a million abduction cases in the U.S. alone, and that declassified government documents prove that the FBI and CIA took this issue very seriously. I really believe, as many do, that there is something very sinister going on. I have been researching this subject for years and have come to find out that

1. they are not aliens
2. they are part of the New World Order agenda
3. they are satanic
4. they are spiritual creatures
5. they are weak, and control people through fear

“I don’t care if it sounds crazy. To me, it’s not any crazier than alien beings from a different galaxy traveling all the way to Earth just to abduct humans in secret, deny Christianity, and support new-age religions. There is more to this. And I hope Peter Jennings has the power to alert the people to the truth.”

OREO BUDGET

Mike Locker writes “thought you might be interested in this:

“President Bush just released another budget plan that is hundreds of pages long and really hard to decipher. In the end, though, it’s just more guns and less butter.

“Last year, to help clarify things, we made a short animation with our founder, Ben Cohen (the ice cream guy), that explains how the budget works in Washington. He’s a food guy, so he used Oreos to show people where their money really goes and how easy it would be to change things. It was a huge hit. Over a million people have seen it, and it’s still getting passed around today. It also won nearly every online award in the book. If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, you can check it out here:

ANOTHER VIEW ON EASON JORDAN

Susan McCrindle Petrarca writes

“The Eason Jordan embarrassment”is NOT a free speech issue. It’s about honesty and objectivity in reporting. The CNN exec crossed the line in attempting to CREATE the news and be part of the story instead of accurately reporting it. If he did not, in fact, make the outrageous, unfounded charges, or if his comments had been incorrectly characterized, Jordan would and should have stayed and fought the charges. He did not. His departure was an admission that he had sacrificed journalistic integrity for cheap sensationalism and an international spotlight — an all-too-common pursuit of today’s mainstream press. Jordan had to go, and CNN needs to clean its house. For too long CNN has been an insidiously anti-American propaganda voice abroad, and it’s time that American citizens knew that. Instead of defending this defenseless behavior, you’d do better to examine your own principles and how as journalists you define integrity and objectivity.

AND ANOTHER

Terry K. Voice writes;

“I find it quite strange that a prominent member of the media would quit his job just because some web sites and television commentators were talking about what this person allegedly did or did not do or say.

“I would think said person’s integrity and freedom to express thoughts and raise questions, if indeed there are legitimate questions to be raised versus wild speculation, questions whether or not the media member was just shooting off his big mouth in a forum he shouldn’t have.

“Certainly, if there is a grave concern that members of “the media” have been getting killed in situations that are very questionable, ALL MEDIA SOURCES and PERSONNEL would be all over this story big time!!

” There are too many “Woodwards and Bernstiens” out there in the world for “strange war stories” to not be fully investigated to the N-th. degree. Too many folks would be privy to these incidents for them to go on without someone bringing them to the light of day.”

ON MICHAEL: DON’T KNOCK OUR TOWN

Vidcamnut writes:

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Frank Rich of the NY Times:

“When the Bush administration isn’t using taxpayers’ money to buy its own fake news, it does everything it can to shut out and pillory real reporters who might tell Americans what is happening in what is, at least in theory, their own government…

“The inability of real journalists to penetrate this White House is not all the White House’s fault. The errors of real news organizations have played perfectly into the administration’s insidious efforts to blur the boundaries between the fake and the real and thereby demolish the whole notion that there could possibly be an objective and accurate free press. Conservatives, who supposedly deplore post-modernism, are now welcoming in a brave new world in which it’s a given that there can be no empirical reality in news, only the reality you want to hear (or they want you to hear)…”

ATTENTION: SEAN HANNITY FANS,

Judd writes “Thought you’d have fun with this:

Contest: Name Hannity’s Puppy

“Keeping with today’s canine theme: Right-wing yakker Sean Hannity is taking suggestions on his blog on what he should name his new puppy. ThinkProgress, as always, is here to help.

“We’re partial to naming the new pup “Alan Colmes,” although “Guckert the Prostie Puppie,” and “Falafel” also are quite popular.

“We’re sure our readers are full of witty, snarky, funny ideas for christening Puppy Hannity. Leave your suggestion in our comments section. The best answer receives a copy of Hannity’s book “Deliver Us From Evil” signed by the members of the Think Progress team.”

How does encouraging participation in publicity games also protest the replacement and confusion of journalists with opinion entertainers on TV? Has the dissector unknowingly joined the show?

Game Over. I have reluctantly disabled the comments on my blog because a small number of self-indulgent spammers and neer do wells with nothing to say about any of the issues I raise or report on, have stepped up the volume of their sniping and SPA's--Stupid personal attacks. I am sure readers find them as offensive and adolescent as I do. All hide behind anonymous emails and never really want replies or a dialogue. Snarky is one thing; insults another.

Your comments are welcome and I am happy to post them in the blog. Share comments, questions and criticisms by emailing me here.

"Curtailment of free speech is rationalized on grounds that a more compelling American tradition forbids criticism of the government when the nation is at war...Nothing can be more destructive of our fundamental democratic traditions than the vicious effort to silence dissenters."
