Monday Mix

Danny is flying back from Italy today, where he testified on media “wrongs against truth and humanity” before the World Tribunal on Iraq. In case you missed it, check out his testimony and his MediaChannel commentary, “Putting the Media on Trial.”

Late Friday, CNN’s top news exec Eason Jordan resigned amidst the McCarthyesque firestorm following remarks he allegedly made about American soldiers intentionally killing journalists in Iraq. Danny wrote about Jordan’s resignation over the weekend, calling it a “chilling of debate.”

MediaChannel executive director Timothy Karr has a great roundup of links on the subject in his MediaCitizen blog, highlighting the role of bloggers covering and escalating ‘Easongate.’

Also in MediaCitizen today, Tim writes about telecom industry-funded think tanks that are attacking grassroots efforts to set up municipal wireless networks. The think thanks, aptly named “sock puppets”, are churning out reports which frame community wireless projects as costly mistakes that run counter to the American ideal of free enterprise.

For lighter fare, check out Tim’s post about born-again libertarian Vox Day. Vox is among those conservatives tempted to gloat over Eason Jordan’s resignation, describing it as a victory over the “left-liberal elites” that –as we all know (wink, wink)– call the shots in the mainstream media.

Oh, and Happy Valentine’s Day! If you’re looking for some non-commercial brain candy, check out “Sex and the Indy,” the current issue of the New York-based Indypendent newspaper.

Game Over. I have reluctantly disabled the comments on my blog because a small number of self-indulgent spammers and neer do wells with nothing to say about any of the issues I raise or report on, have stepped up the volume of their sniping and SPA's--Stupid personal attacks. I am sure readers find them as offensive and adolescent as I do. All hide behind anonymous emails and never really want replies or a dialogue. Snarky is one thing; insults another.

Your comments are welcome and I am happy to post them in the blog. Share comments, questions and criticisms by emailing me here.

    Thank you for understanding.

"Curtailment of free speech is rationalized on grounds that a more compelling American tradition forbids criticism of the government when the nation is at war...Nothing can be more destructive of our fundamental democratic traditions than the vicious effort to silence dissenters."
—Martin Luther King, Jr.
