“There will be a lot of hand-wringing in the coming days over the shooting of Rep. Giffords this morning at a constituent event — some of it, almost certainly, from the folks at Fox, who will wonder aloud how this kind of thing could happen.
It can happen, in fact, because conservatives so thoughtlessly and readily use violent eliminationist rhetoric when talking about “liberals” (to wit: anyone who is not a conservative). They will adamantly deny it, of course, but the cold reality is that this kind of talk creates permission for angry and violent people to act it out.” [More here →]

Rep. Giffords is out of surgery and in critical condition with a single gunshot wound to the head, hospital says. President Obama addressed today’s shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 17 others at a political event at a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona. Six people are dead [including a 9-year-old child] and the shooter has been identified as 22-year-old Jared Laughner or Jared Lee Loughner [both names have been used]. [More here →]

President Obama issued a statement earlier here, Speaker Boehner here, Mrs. Palin here [43 words] and Artizona’s senior Senator McCain here on this violent, reprehensible act of terrorism on our soil. This brings to mind the rhetoric “we fight them there so we don’t have to fight them here.”
Doesn’t charity begin at home?
Although i found this on Facebook, which could have been added today, while nothing has been concretely linked to Mr. Laughner being a follower or supporter, below is information from March of last year, after the health care vote targeting Congresswoman Giffords:
