What’s it like for a judge to be judged? Let’s ask Sonia Sotomayor who had to sit there grinning as her outlook and work was demeaned with a smile, and was given an education in political partisanship as GOP Senator after GOP Senator went after her “agenda” and the President’s without acknowledging how they have, over the years, twisted law and confirmed zealots as judges. It was all playing for the cameras, but the safe money is on the proposition that this deal is done. Sotomayor avoided any controversial assertions and denied she was an “activist” judge. She flew straight down the center with a very confident and non-defensive presentation

WASHINGTON — Her confirmation all but assured, Sonia Sotomayor pledged Monday to serve the “larger interest of impartial justice” rather than any narrow cause if she becomes the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court.

“My personal and professional experiences help me listen and understand, with the law always commanding the result in every case,” Sotomayor told senators at a nationally televised confirmation hearing.

The remarks about judicial philosophy were her first since President Barack Obama nominated the South Bronx-born and Ivy League-educated veteran of 17 years on the federal bench. They appeared aimed at Republicans who have questioned her commitment to impartiality in light of a 2001 remark that experience as a “wise Latina” might give her an advantage over white males.

The 55-year-old appeals court judge spoke after several hours of speechmaking in which Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee praised her as a Hispanic pioneer well qualified for the high court and Republicans questioned her impartiality as well as President Barack Obama’s views in nominating her.”

As Rachel Maddow noted lasted night on MSNBC, the Republican members avoided her record and even her so-called Judicial philosophy in any detail, and,instead went after racial issues and their own paranoia with constant references to one comment made off the bench about her seeing herself as a wise Latina woman. The context of that remark or her intent in making it was never questioned. What we saw was a lot of posturing and an UNWISE agenda driven White Men doing what they do best–appealing to fear and stereotypes,
